Vivantes Hospital in Friedrichshain, formerly known as the first city hospital in Berlin, now houses the city's renowned historic buildings. In this context, the renovation and expansion project aims to seamlessly integrate new and old structures, while meeting diverse needs such as diagnosis, treatment, nursing, hospitalization, and parking. The goal is to create an efficient collaborative medical complex that provides a comforting healing environment.

Expansion for Berlin's first city hospital

As the largest municipal medical group in Germany, the Vivantes Group operates numerous hospital facilities in Berlin, catering to one-third of the city's patients. This has earned the group a reputation as an indispensable part of Berlin's healthcare system. Vivantes Hospital in Friedrichshain, once the first city hospital in Berlin, has now transformed into one of the largest and most significant local medical institutions.

The Vivantes Hospital in Friedrichshain, founded in 1874, stands as a witness to the modern medical history of Berlin and houses several listed buildings. To further enhance its medical services and align with the vision of the Vivantes Group, the hospital has undergone multiple renovations and expansions.

In this project, the entire campus was planned in phases, with a focus on renovating and expanding Buildings 15 and 16.

Building 15 was transformed into a north-south transportation hub, with the addition of Buildings 15.1 and 15.2 on the east and west sides as ward buildings. Building 16.2 was renovated as a multifunctional surgical building, and Building 16.6 was added on the southwest side as a radiology building. Additionally, the underground space between Buildings 15 and 16 was connected, and the courtyard was repurposed.

Collaborative Medical Complex

The new ward buildings, 15.1 and 15.2, are both six stories tall and approximately 30 meters in depth. They are designed to collaborate with Building 15, which runs through the campus from north to south. This integration enhances the existing comb-structure of the hospital's masterplan and introduces an east-west axis to the campus. By closely integrating new and old buildings, optimizing organization and circulation, the hospital forms an efficient and collaborative medical complex.

The new ward buildings have a clear layout that effectively meets the functional requirements of the hospital.

On the 1st floor, 15.1 accommodates the nuclear medicine, anesthesia, and intensive care medicine department, while 15.2 houses the pediatric emergency and radiology department.

From the 2nd to the 6th floor, the main purpose is to provide nursing wards. The 2nd to 5th floors are dedicated to general nursing wards, which include pediatric and elderly care; the 6th floor is specifically designed for advanced nursing wards.

The underground space of 15.1 is utilized as a parking lot, which is linked to Building 16, while the underground space of 15.2 is designated as employee changing rooms.

Furthermore, the design of the renovation project focused on Building 15, redefining its central zone as the north-south hub, which connects with the new ward buildings.

Additionally, the layout of the outdoor space has been transformed by Building 15.1, revitalizing the courtyard enclosed by Buildings 14, 15, and 16. This redesign includes the addition of a natural healing landscape, enhancing the overall environment of the hospital.

Homely Healing Space

While prioritizing the provision of state-of-the-art medical facilities and services, the design also considers the practical needs of both doctors and patients. The goal is to create a bright, modern, and friendly healthcare space that maximizes the experience for all users. By considering the various requirements, the design aims to ensure a positive and comfortable healing environment.

From a hospital management perspective, the design prioritizes efficient circulation and organization to ensure that each functional space operates in an orderly manner, while creating a convenient, comfortable, and natural environment for staff.

However, from the perspective of patients, the design goes beyond functionality and incorporates intimate themes into elements such as color, lighting, and VI systems. This approach creates a safe and warm atmosphere, counteracting the stereotypical cold feeling of hospitals. By providing visual and psychological relief, the design allows patients to not only receive professional treatment but also experience a sense of comfort, contributing to their overall healing process.
